A devastating two-vehicle wreck claimed the life of 38-year-old Waco resident Ericka Ruiz on the afternoon of Oct. 24. State troopers were dispatched around 1:50 p.m. to Farm to Market 2490, just north of China Spring, after a southbound GMC Yukon veered into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons and struck Ruiz's northbound Nissan Pathfinder head-on. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the crash site. Two passengers in her vehicle, ages 12 and 14, were rushed to a regional hospital for medical care, as was the 37-year-old male driver of the Yukon. Following the tragedy, local residents and loved ones quickly organized efforts to lift up the grieving household, including establishing a meal train. Yolanda Alaman, the grandmother of the two injured children, shared a heartfelt message on their behalf: "With heavy hearts, we are asking for your love, prayers and support for the Alaman children as they endure the heartbreaking loss of their mother. No child should have to face the loss of their mother while worrying about what tomorrow may bring. Although we cannot take away their pain or replace the love of their mom, we can remind them that they are not alone and that people care deeply about their future. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for every donation, every share, every prayer, and every act of kindness. Your support means more than words can express." Ruiz, who graduated from McGregor High School in 2006, is being remembered for her selfless devotion to others. Christy Leos, who collaborated alongside Ruiz on the Education Foundation, shared that Ruiz was "always just wanting the best for everyone." Leos added, "When I think about Erika and the way I describe her… she was just an angel on Earth. She was such a pure soul, and a Godly woman." Emphasizing the collective desire to help, Leos noted, "We can’t take away their grief. We can’t take away their pain. One of the things we can do is take something off their plate." Tributes have continued to pour in from across the community. Area resident Ashlea Sheguit honored Ruiz as a "kind and gentle soul," adding, "heaven gained a beautiful angel. May the Lord grant peace and healing to [Ruiz’s] husband, kids and family." Authorities have not released additional details regarding the ongoing investigation.
